There are many holistic treatments in Traditional Chinese Medicine. One such treatment that you may have heard of just as much as – if not more than – acupuncture is cupping. Cupping therapy found its way into the news during the 2016 Summer Olympics when Olympians like Michael Phelps and Alex Naddour shared their treatment with the world.

Cupping therapy provides many benefits beyond increased athletic performance. These include reduction of inflammation, treatment of low back discomfort, lowering stress responses, increased immunity, rapid healing from respiratory issues, better recovery time from infections, improved digestion, and reduction in IBS symptoms.

The process of cupping involves placing glass, bamboo, or plastic jars on the skin. Before the jars are placed, a vacuum is created through the application of heat to the inside of the jar. Depending on the TCM practitioner’s assessment of your health challenge, the jars will be left in place or can be moved around throughout the treatment.

Each cupping treatment draws blood and Qi to the surface of your skin, breaking up any stagnation or blocked Qi. This triggers your body’s natural healing ability by flushing out any toxins.

Gua Sha

Another TCM therapy provided here at Attunement Acupuncture is called gua sha. This is another surface treatment that draws blood to the surface of your body. Often, gua sha is misnamed in Western material as a form of massage. However, the process is more intense than massage. The process begins with lubricating the skin using oils, then using an instrument (often made of porcelain or bone) to rub the skin’s surface. The designated treatment area is rubbed in multiple downward strokes at varying degrees of pressure.

Gua Sha is a painless procedure that brings blood and toxins to the surface of the skin – allowing the body to disperse energy blocks and enabling detox. Only after the toxins are released, and the Qi is flowing can one’s body begin to heal.

Some of the many health benefits provided by gua sha are reduced inflammation, decreased pain, rapid healing, boosted immune system, recovery from flu or colds, detoxification, and more.

Both cupping and gua sha use the body’s natural processes to break up blockages in Qi and to enable detoxification as well as healing. These holistic therapies are excellent additions to acupuncture, Chinese herbal solutions, homeopathy, NET, and other holistic health solutions offered here at Attunement Acupuncture. Danny was incredibly knowledgeable and very welcoming. I felt comfortable and relaxed during my treatment. I would absolutely recommend her for acupuncture and cupping! She did a fantastic job!
